Samurai lords and their retainers once walked these very temple grounds seeking protection, favor in battle, or spiritual clarity.

During your guided tour, you’ll explore the temple’s secrets—including a pitch-black underground passage symbolizing the path to enlightenment. You’ll also learn about Zenkoji’s role in protecting Buddhist traditions during times of civil strife and discover how its spiritual heritage influenced local warrior clans.

Train in the Ways of the Samurai Just Minutes Away

After immersing yourself in history, shift into a new role—apprentice Samurai. Just a short walk from Zenkoji lies a Japanese traditional style room where you’ll step into the past. Here, a Master Samurai instructor will teach you the foundations of katana handling and posture—emphasizing grace, discipline, and fun!

Dressed in your own Samurai-style outfit, including yukata (light kimono), hakama pants and sword, you’ll strike poses, learn attack and defense stances. All levels are welcome, and the experience is built around enjoyment and self-expression.

Capture the Moment in a Place Where Time Stands Still

The location where your experience takes place is modeled in the pure Japanese style, creating an immersive setting straight out of a Samurai film. Wide shoji windows, tatami floors, and wooden beams transport you to another time. And yes—photos and videos are very much encouraged! A highlight reel of your Samurai adventure will be made available after the session.

Meeting Location: Your tour will begin at Nagano Central Square. Your guide will meet you at either 9:00 am or 1:30 pm.

Important information:

• This is a walking tour with a reasonable amount of walking, especially between the station and Zenkoji Temple.
• Please note that the stairs leading to the samurai experience venue are short, but steep and narrow. If you have any accessibility needs, kindly inform us in advance.
• In Japan, authentic katanas are classified as illegal weapons under strict licensing laws. Tourists can see them in museums or specialty shops, but theatrical swords are widely used in performances, training, and during our samurai experience.
• This activity focuses on proper sword techniques and kata accessible to all including families. It does not involve any type of slicing or cutting of objects.

• Samurai Experience (1 hour)

earlier or later depending on how busy Zenkoji Temple is, especially during
holiday periods and on weekends.
