From controlled cuts to calm release: a guided sword-and-archery experience in Nagano
Long before the samurai became synonymous with the sword, archery sat at the heart of warrior life. In Japan’s early medieval era, elite fighters trained to shoot from horseback, relying on the bow for range and the blade when distance closed or conditions demanded it. This experience brings those two skills together in a hands-on session designed for beginners and curious travelers. You will train with a sword under expert guidance, then try traditional Japanese archery using the hankyū, a compact half-bow style that emphasizes posture, breathing, and calm focus.

Katana training
You’ll begin with the foundations that make sword practice safe and effective: how to stand with balance, move your feet without losing stability, and hold the katana so the blade stays controlled and aligned. Your instructor will demonstrate each element, then coach you as you repeat it, making small adjustments to posture and proper position.

From there you’ll move into traditional forms and structured drills that teach clean, repeatable movement. You’ll practice drawing and returning the sword calmly, then work through basic cuts and finishing positions with an emphasis on accuracy and follow-through. As you progress, those single techniques connect into short sequences, so you can feel how timing and body mechanics work together. The goal is not strength or speed, but precision, awareness, and consistency.

Hankyū archery: posture, breath, and a calm release
Next, you’ll shift to archery practice with the hankyū, a traditional half-bow used for close-range training. The rhythm feels very different from modern sport archery. Instead of rushing toward the target, you’ll slow down and build a repeatable routine, starting with stance and alignment, then adding breathing and a steady, controlled release. Your instructor will demonstrate the technique clearly, then guide you step by step as you draw and shoot under close supervision.

As your confidence grows, you’ll have the chance to try different types of bows, each with its own balance and “feel” in the hands. This makes the practice more engaging and helps you notice how small changes in equipment affect your shot. The session ends with a friendly accuracy challenge, where the goal is consistency and focus rather than power, and everyone gets a chance to enjoy the progress they’ve made.

A Traditional Setting, guided in English
Your English-speaking instructor (or guide translation) teaches in a clear, supportive way, adjusting the pace to your experience level. Beginners get careful step-by-step coaching, while guests with martial arts backgrounds can refine details and challenge themselves a little more. Group sizes are kept small so everyone receives individual attention, questions are welcomed, and safety stays at the center of both sword and archery practice.

This is not a demonstration from the sidelines. You’ll train with the weapons in your own hands, moving through the fundamentals of sword and archery in a way that highlights what samurai practice involved: coordination, composure, and repeatable technique.
