Sacred Streets & Temple: From Zenkoji Temple to the Hidden Heart of Nagano
Step beyond the station and into the heart of old Japan. This walking tour of Nagano City is more than a simple stroll. It is a journey into the cultural spirit of a region once traveled by pilgrims, monks, and samurai. From the revered grounds of Zenkoji Temple to the quiet backstreets lined with local shops, a former sake brewery, and traditional kura storehouses, this experience reveals a deeper side of Nagano that many visitors overlook.
Nagano City – Where All Roads Once Led
Zenkoji Temple is one of the oldest and most significant Buddhist temples in Japan, with its main hall officially designated as a National Treasure. Located about a 25-minute walk from Nagano Station, it is often the first stop for many visitors to the city. But on this tour, we take a slightly different path.

Starting from the Nagano Central Square, your guide will lead you along a historical route to the temple, tracing the same steps once taken by monks, pilgrims, and samurai. This path was the main approach to Zenkoji for centuries and still serves that purpose today. Along the way, you’ll discover notable cultural and historical landmarks, as well as sites linked to more recent events such as the 1998 Winter Olympic Games.

Zenkoji Temple – A 1400 Years-old History Temple
Nagano’s streets still echo with the footsteps of ancient pilgrims, thanks to the Omotesando—the historic road leading to Zenkoji Temple. This wide, stone-paved path was once part of a major pilgrimage route stretching from distant provinces such as nearby Matsumoto City. Travelers would walk for days, sometimes weeks, to reach this sacred site. Today, it remains lined with traditional inns, shops, and cafés that welcome modern-day wanderers, preserving the spirit of a road that has guided visitors for more than 1,400 years.

At the end of this road stands Zenkoji Temple, one of Japan’s oldest, largest, and most important Buddhist temples. Said to enshrine the first Buddhist statue ever brought to the country, Zenkoji is unique in its open-door approach, welcoming people of all faiths and backgrounds. Your guide will lead you through its towering wooden gates and incense-filled courtyards, and if you choose, into the temple’s pitch-dark inner corridor, a symbolic journey toward spiritual rebirth. This is more than a sightseeing stop. It is a moment to connect with the spiritual heritage at the core of Japanese history.

Hidden Charms Behind Storehouse Walls & Japanese Oyaki Bun Tasting
After visiting the temple, your guide will lead you through a nearby historic neighborhood where a former sake brewery still stands. You will explore its traditional buildings, once used throughout the brewing process, and learn how sake production helped shape the city’s cultural landscape. This part of the tour also introduces you to the idea of “Shinshu” sake, local varieties produced across Nagano Prefecture. Along the way, you will also have the chance to taste a warm, handmade oyaki. These traditional, vegan-friendly buns are filled with seasonal vegetables and are a beloved specialty of the region.

Your guide will then take you to a quiet alley tucked behind the main street. This peaceful corner of the city feels like a hidden world, lined with artisan shops, cafés, and small boutiques housed inside traditional storehouses known as kura. Their distinct black-and-white plaster design gives the district a timeless, photogenic charm. As you stroll through these quiet backstreets, your guide will share stories behind the architecture and explain how these buildings reflect the spirit of old Nagano while embracing its modern, creative energy.
