Experience Two Timeless Traditions in One Unforgettable Half-day tour
Tea first arrived in Japan in the 8th century, introduced as a medicinal drink by monks returning from China. Over the centuries, it became an art form and a symbol of hospitality, practiced in temples and noble homes alike. In this guided experience, you’ll explore both Japan’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
Your afternoon begins with a walking tour of Zenkoji Temple, one of the country’s oldest and most revered Buddhist sites, followed by a traditional tea ceremony in a nearby teahouse. While many visitors associate tea culture with Kyoto, discovering it in Nagano offers a more personal and relaxed atmosphere. The region’s deep ties to the Nakasendo trail, the historic route connecting Kyoto and Edo, add meaningful context to your journey.

Tour Zenkoji Temple and Discover Its History and Legend
Zenkoji Temple is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Japan. During the feudal era, pilgrims traveled great distances to reach it, often walking along the historic Nakasendo road. This important route passed near Matsumoto and connected Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Nagano and the northern regions. Because tea and temple culture were closely linked, the Nakasendo played a key role in the development of tea culture in Japan.

As you explore the beautifully preserved temple grounds, your guide will share stories that have been passed down for centuries. One well-known legend tells of an elderly woman, disliked by her neighbors and never known to visit temples, who was led to Zenkoji by an ox. There, she encountered a sacred message that inspired her to change her ways and live a more virtuous life.

From Temple Culture to Tea Ceremony Traditions
After your visit to Zenkoji, your guide will walk with you to a nearby traditional teahouse for an authentic tea ceremony. Along the way, take in the atmosphere of the old Nakasendo road and reflect on how important this historic route once was for travelers, monks, and merchants alike. At the teahouse, your host, a trained sadōka (tea ceremony practitioner), will greet you and introduce the customs and steps of the tea ceremony. Step inside the teahouse and take your seat. The quiet space helps you focus as your tea ceremony experience begins.

Your experience begins with an explanation of the principles behind the tea ceremony, including the key concept of wa-kei-sei-jaku: harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. Before the tea is served, you will enjoy a small seasonal sweet. This is always eaten first, as it helps balance the natural bitterness of the matcha.

Take Part in an Authentic Tea Ceremony
With your tea master guiding the way and your local guide nearby to assist, you’ll observe each step of the tea-making process. The ceremony follows a precise structure, with clear roles for both host and guest. Every movement, from how the bowl is handled to the way the tea is whisked, reflects years of careful practice.

Then it’s your turn. Try making the tea yourself, following the same motions you just observed. The ritual includes polite exchanges with your host and fellow guests, so do your best to use a little Japanese if you can. Afterward, you are welcome to browse the small teahouse shop. While there’s no obligation to purchase anything, your guide and the tea master can help you select a meaningful tea-related souvenir if you choose to take something home.
