Discover the rich and seductive world of Ukiyo-e with our local English-speaking guide
Step back in time to Obuse, a historically rich village just a short train ride from Nagano. Famed for its preserved Edo period atmosphere and picturesque streets, Obuse holds a special place in Japan’s cultural heritage thanks to the legendary ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. Best known for The Great Wave off Kanagawa, Hokusai spent the final chapter of his life in this peaceful town, creating some of his last and most personal masterpieces here.
Today, Obuse is more than just a village. It is a beautifully curated blend of Japanese history, art, and local tradition. Strolling through its narrow lanes, you’ll find art museums, sake breweries, chestnut confectioners, and traditional gardens all woven into the fabric of everyday life. This guided walking tour invites you to experience the heart of Obuse, where the spirit of Edo still lingers and every corner tells a story.

Hokusai’s beloved friend Kozan
Takai Kozan was a wealthy, local merchant and a close friend of Hokusai. The two first met in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), where Kozan ran a shop specializing in goods from Nagano. They shared a deep appreciation and talent for calligraphy, painting, and the arts. It is believed that their friendship and mutual interests led Kozan to invite Hokusai to Obuse, a gesture that would shape the town’s artistic legacy forever.

In his mid-80s, Hokusai made the long and risky journey on foot from Edo to Obuse alone. According to legend, he knocked on every door in town before finally finding his dear friend’s home. With your guide, you’ll visit this historic house and stroll through the neighborhood, where Edo period architecture still lines the streets. Along the way, your guide will point out key details and share stories about daily life and culture during Hokusai’s time.

World-renowned Hokusai Ukiyo-e Artist
Katsushika Hokusai spent the final years of his life in Obuse and is considered one of the most important artists in Japanese history. His ukiyo-e series, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, includes the world-famous The Great Wave off Kanagawa and stands as one of his most iconic and influential bodies of work.

During your guided tour, you’ll explore the Hokusai Ukiyo-e Museum and learn about Hokusai’s life and artistic legacy. As one of Nagano Prefecture’s most important museums of Japanese art, along with the Matsumoto City Ukiyo-e Museum, this visit offers a glimpse into a time when Japan’s long period of self-isolation brought peace, cultural flourishing, and a focus on beauty and everyday pleasures.

Take in the Vibe of the Historical Obuse Village
As you walk through the village, you’ll discover charming old merchant streets lined with sake breweries, local craft shops, chestnut confectioneries, and open gardens. The relaxed pace and rural charm are part of what makes Obuse so special. Just beyond the village, the landscape opens into fields of seasonal fruit, rice paddies, and quiet countryside views that complete the experience.

What makes this village even more intriguing is the nearby Gansho-in Temple. Located about a 30-minute walk from the village center, the temple is home to a magnificent phoenix painting on its ceiling. This soaring masterpiece is believed to be Hokusai’s final great work, and it remains the largest surviving artwork by the artist today.
